The Countdown to London Anime Con
It’s just under two weeks until the convention season of 2011 kicks off with London Anime Con, another convention from the Anime League, they of Alcon fame. Manga Market will be there on both the Saturday and Sunday, with our friends from Dolly Dare also joining us on the Saturday. What do you have to look forward to at the con aside from that? Glad you asked!
A provisional timetable was released to facebook followers last week, showing the events they have in store. Whilst these times are subject to change, you can see what is going on HERE.
The unusual thing about LAC is that it runs continuously from midday until past midnight on the Saturday, with events taking place throughout the venue all evening. This is quite pleasant – as it means that the very early morning won’t lead to fans napping in corners during the kareoke! On Sunday, London Gaming Con takes place, with a mix of tournaments across games and consoles. DS:London are running Bomberman and Tetris DS tournaments, whilst WeAreArcade are hosting a Gamers Quiz. Neo Empire are running their Ultimate Clash Xtreme!
Saturday night brings Kareoke (it wouldn’t be a con without it!), and a live performance from 4-piece UK band Esprit D’Air, a group highly influenced by Japanese popular music styles. After the Opening Ceremony, there is also a performance from the inimitable Johnny Lazer.
Returning for London Anime Con are the popular favourites from previous conventions: a Cosplay Auction on Saturday, and Whose Line is it Anime? and the Masquerade on Sunday. There are also Q&A Sessions across the weekend with LittleKuriboh (Of YuGiOh! Abridged fame) and VA Marianne Miller, amongst others. The wonderful Akemi Solloway is returning as well, to run more sessions on Japanese Culture.
Loads of fantastic Anime films from Manga Entertainment are being screened across the weekend as well, including Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, the award-winning The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, and Ghost in the Shell and its sequel. There are also loads of hands-on activities to look forward to, with two How to Draw Manga workshops taking place on Saturday, Giant Origami making, Chibi Clay-Modelling and a series of Cosplay panels too.
Sunday is London Anime Con’s first ever UK Manga Festival in the dealers room, with a selection of small press, independent and specialist manga dealers, including Sweatdrop Studios. You will also see a selection of artists selling originals and prints, including the extraordinarily talented DestinyBlue!
There all weekend are the wonderful Cosplay Portrait team as well. Check out their website to see the wonderful job they did at cons last year, see if you can spot any of the Manga Market team in them! Make sure to swing by and see them over the weekend.
Manga Market are looking forward to kicking off this convention year in style! Come and say hi to us, we’ll be opposite Cyber Candy. This will be our second convention placed near those guys, it’s not going to be good for either our wallets or our waistbands!
We’ll be collecting pictures for our Flickr and our Caption Contests, so if you’ve got a great cosplay, and think you can give us a giggle, come and hunt us down!
