Gantz Live Action Movie Release Announced
MangaUK announced today that they will be releasing the Gantz Live Action Movies in the UK. The two films premiered in Japan in January, and the first was simulcast to theatres across America. They met with high levels of praise from both fans and critics, and from the look of the promotional material which has been released, it’s not hard to see why. An incredible amount of effort has been put into making the style match that of the manga.
Gantz tells the story of Kei Kurono and his friend Masaru Kato who die in a train accident and become part of a semi-posthumous “game” in which they and several other recently deceased people are forced to hunt down and kill aliens armed with a handful of futuristic items of equipment and weaponry. The tone is very dark, similar to Battle Royale in its depiction of violence and what can drive normal people to kill, as well as a lot of highly sexual imagery. It is not a series for the faint-hearted, but with a revolutionary digital rendering technique used throughout the manga, Gantz is beautifully realised in all formats, and has a distinctive style.
The first movie is due for DVD and Blu-Ray release in October this year, whilst the second is due to follow in early 2012.
